electricityDoes your electricity bill seem to be always on the rise? Here are a few changes you can make that will quickly pay off by reducing your electricity bill.

Home heating system

In Nordic countries like Canada, the type of heating used has a major impact on household costs. Heating with oil is probably the most expensive option. It will probably save you a lot of money to change your heating system since oil is so expensive. For example, natural gas offers a clear advantage in regards to operating costs once the oil heating system has been replaced.

Type of thermostat

An electronic thermostat allows you to maintain a constant temperature with much more precision. Using an electronic thermostat instead of a bimetallic thermostat helps reduce your electric bill since temperature is efficiently controlled at the desired degree. Combined with certain practices such as lowering the temperature at night, reducing the temperature by 0.5 degrees, opening curtains during the day and closing them at night reduces the consumption cost of electricity without affecting the comfort level in the home. In addition, programmable models allow you to easily set the temperature lower when you are away for long periods of time, thereby reducing heating costs.

Type of lightbulbs used

Incandescent lightbulbs consume a lot of electricity. You will quickly see results if you replace them with LED lightbulbs. While more expensive, LED lightbulbs have a longer lifespan and consume much less electricity than incandescent bulbs, which will pay off in the mid-term.

Exchanging incandescent bulbs with fluocompact lightbulbs is also an excellent solution since they also have low electricity costs. Generally, the Energy Star label on lightbulbs is a guarantee of low energy consumption and therefore a sign that you will save on your electricity bill.

Choice of showerhead model

Traditional showerheads consume a large amount of water. In addition to not being very environmentally-friendly, they have high electricity costs since they require a lot of hot water. Replacing your showerhead with a low-flow model is an excellent way to kill two birds with one stone.

Type of toilet

Toilet bowls require a large amount of water every time the toilet is flushed. Installing a dual flush toilet will reduce the amount of water you use and allow you to save 2.5 litres for each flush. As is the case for a low-flow showerhead, you will reduce your electricity bill as well as how much water you consume.
