Copper gutters have a charm and warmth to them that no other materials have, especially when used on historical houses. However, over time, eavestroughs made of copper tend to tarnish and lose their luster. Here are a few tips on how to clean them so that they can shine as bright as on the first day you had them installed, if that’s what you’re looking for, of course.

Apply a cleaning product on your copper gutter

The first step consists in applying a cleaning product specifically designed for copper on the outside surface of the eavestrough. Based on the product selected, a 20- to 30-minute period is generally enough to let the product do its job. This will allow the cleaning agent to penetrate the material and remove stains. Alu-Rex invites you to read the instructions on the manufacturer’s product.

Remove cleaning product applied on the copper gutter

Once the product has had time to penetrate the material, simply remove it with a synthetic brush to make stains and oxidation disappear. Generally, stains can easily be removed thereafter.

Use a polish on the copper gutter

When the cleaning product for rain gutters has been thoroughly removed and stains have disappeared, it is recommended to use a polish on the copper to give it back its luster and counter the oxidizing effect. If the cleaning product is acid-based, and only in that case, use a mix of baking soda (sodium carbonate) with water for the same results. Subsequently, rinse the polish with soapy water and let the gutters dry. They will be all shiny and ready to spruce up your property yet again.
