house-familySpring comes with its fair share of outdoor maintenance tasks. Getting a head start on these chores early in the season means more time to enjoy the beautiful weather. It will also help prevent small problems from turning into something much more serious. As is the case with most household chores, it is better to inspect and repair than to let problems fester.

Check the roof

Most roof problems are visible from the outside. For example, it is important to look for any missing or damaged shingles and have them replaced. We also recommend removing piles of debris, leaves and conifer needles from the valleys and even from your gutters if they were not cleaned the previous fall. This will help ensure proper water drainage to the downspouts.

Have a look around the exterior siding

For houses with brick, stucco or wooden siding, it is especially important to check for damaged areas. Pay particular attention to areas below gutters and near downspouts as water spots indicate poor drainage or an obstruction of the gutter system.

Keep an eye on areas at risk of water infiltration

If you have a masonry chimney, be sure to check the joints between the bricks or stones. The sealant around windows should also be inspected to make sure it is intact and watertight.

It is also important to monitor even minor cracks in the foundation as they can lead to serious water leaks. If you notice a crack, your best course of action is to contact a professional who will know how to repair it properly.

Similarly, make sure to check for any wet areas in the basement as these are also linked to insidious water leaks.

Check that the attic is in good condition

In the spring, it is important to make sure that your attic has not been taken over by insects or mold. Proper insulation and ventilation will also help prevent problems due to mold growth.

Maintain porches and patios

As winter comes to an end, any damaged, broken or missing boards on your patio should be repaired. This is also a great time to clean, stain or paint your porch to give it a fresh look for summer.

Once these tasks are checked off your list, all that’s left is to enjoy your yard to the fullest.
