Closing your swimming pool is a task that you must do in the fall if you wish to keep it in good working order when summer comes knocking again. This must be done with care as it is a key step in protecting your swimming pool from damage caused by freezing weather conditions. Below are the main steps to follow to complete this annual task.

Balance chemical products

Approximately one week prior to closing your pool, you must balance the level of the chemical products used. You can adjust the balance levels of phosphate and chlorine yourself, on top of adding algaecide. It is important to maintain the chemical balance in your pool, even during the cold season.

Some companies sell special kits that will help you close your pool. These come with all products that should be used along with detailed instructions. This should make your life easier on top of being a cheaper alternative to purchasing each product separately.

Wash your pool carefully

When you close your swimming pool, it is essential to clean everything thoroughly. To do so, vacuum the bottom of the pool and remove any remaining leaves or debris that could float to the surface. Moreover, make sure that you clean the edges of the pool where mold and algae usually accumulate. If the filter can be removed, take it out and clean it carefully.

Lower the water level

In the case of in-ground swimming pools, lower the water level just below filter height. For above-ground swimming pools, lower the water level below the skimmer level.

Store your equipment and empty the pool hoses

It is important to remove any water remaining in pool hoses and in any equipment left in the swimming pool as it will freeze over winter and cause major damage. You can remove the water in pool hoses with a Shop-Vac vacuum. You can also use swimming pool anti-freeze to reduce the risk of winter damage. For in-ground swimming pools, this step is even more crucial and time-consuming.

Pool accessories such as ladders and diving boards must be cleaned and stored before installing the protective tarp over the pool. The winter cover protects the pool against UV rays that cause algal bloom and prevents leaves and other debris from collecting in the water. Usually, if the tarp covers the entire surface of the pool during winter, any remaining water should be clear when you open your swimming pool in the spring.
