Roofing

The installation of a new roof is a major home maintenance expense. Decisions associated with this should not be taken lightly. From the budget allocated to the types of materials chosen, with all the details in between, take into account that your roof will last for many years.

Set a budget for roofing cover

Even before you select the type of material that you want for your roof, it is important to set a budget and to stay within it. The roof serves as a design element and protection for your home, and you should make sure to spend the appropriate amount on it. The total cost of the roof can vary depending on the materials chosen and the size of the roof or, of course, on whether you hire a professional roofing specialist.

Evaluating your roof

Roofs can be divided into two major categories: sloped roofs and flat roofs. In the case of a flat roof, the choices are limited to an elastomer membrane, or asphalt and gravel. For sloped roofs, which is usually the preferred choice for most homes, there is a much wider range of options. From asphalt shingles to tin roofing, there are many options available, depending on your tastes and budget.

Choice of materials: budget, style and service life

Although a roof is not eternal, certain materials are much more durable than others. Also, each material has its own type of installation and special requirements as well as varying costs depending on what is selected. Here are the main materials used in roofing:

Asphalt and gravel

Quite inexpensive, an asphalt and gravel roof easily allows spot repairs, when needed. However, if the multilayer membrane is not properly installed, many problems can arise. This type of roofing requires good maintenance to achieve its service life, which is usually about 15 years.

Asphalt shingles

Available in many colors and quite easy to install, asphalt shingles are very energy efficient. The cost of and guarantee on asphalt shingles depend greatly on the class chosen (A, B, C or D). However, if the installation is not done according to industry standards, water infiltration may occur.

Elastomer membrane

Primarily used on flat roofs, this type of covering is very durable and offers consistent quality. Unfortunately, the main disadvantage of this type of roof is the fact that it cannot be recycled, and it requires a lot of energy to produce. It is therefore not a very environmentally friendly choice.

Metal

Be it tin, enameled steel, copper, galvanized or painted steel, or another form of metal, the advantages and service life are similar. Fully recyclable and requiring practically no maintenance, it is a logical choice that adds value to your home. However, this product requires a lot of energy to produce and is very expensive. It is also necessary to install snow guards to avoid accidents, which adds an extra cost.

Plastic panels

A new product, plastic roofing cover is made to look like cedar shakes, slate shingles or clay tiles. A rather good imitation for a lot less money, this roofing material also offers the advantage of being light, easy to maintain and simple to install. However, its service life is unknown as of yet, since it is new on the market, and its capacity to withstand significant temperature variations and fire resistance still remain to be proven.

Choice of color

The choice of color for your roof, where it is possible, is very personal. Indeed, tastes vary from one person to the next. However, by looking at the color combinations on neighboring houses, you can get an idea of what you like. Furthermore, your roofer can provide you with full-size samples to help you compare with existing siding and, also, to see the color in various light conditions.
