rain_barrelYou want to install your very own rain barrel? Don’t forget that there are a few rules to follow in order to ensure that everything goes smoothly. The location of the rain barrel, the way it has been installed and the maintenance work performed are all factors that will allow for efficient rainwater management.

Ideal location for your rain barrel

If you want to take full advantage of the effect of gravity, it is recommended that your rain barrel be slightly elevated. It will thus be easier to have access to the water inside the rain barrel. Furthermore, it is preferable to install the latter on concrete blocks or on a rock for a stable base.

Although you might think that it is generally a good thing to have you rain barrel close to where rainwater will be used once it has been collected, it is important to install it in a place with low traffic in order to avoid someone knocking the barrel over – usually against the residence. It is of the utmost importance that the barrel not be positioned in such a way that it could easily topple over. The risk of injury would be rather high, especially for children and house pets.

Regular maintenance and health measures regarding rain barrels

Always make sure that there are no leaves or debris in the water. To that end, you may want to install leaf guard at the opening of the barrel. Furthermore, using a gutter guard will prevent debris from penetrating the eavestrough and flowing down the downspouts into the rain barrel. In addition, a rain gutter protection will prevent the rain gutter from getting clogged, which could thwart your attempts at collecting rainwater. During summer, regularly check the connectors and wire mesh to make sure that there are no obstructions.

Moreover, it is paramount to make sure that no algae has grown in the rain barrel. It is strongly recommended to opt for an opaque barrel as a transparent one will let light through, which in turn may lead to the presence of algae. In the event that you notice the presence of algae, empty the barrel completely and clean it thoroughly.

Caution notice relative to rain barrels

Water collected in a rain barrel may not be fit for human consumption. More specifically, if the water collected has been trickling down an asphalt shingle roof, it is highly possible that it is not drinking water. When in doubt, do not use it to water fruits and vegetables. However, you may still use it to water non-edible plants, fill water basins or clean various surfaces!

Moreover, as Canadian winters are rather rough, it is preferable to store you rain barrel during the cold season. The freezing weather could cause the plastic to crack, especially if there is water remaining at the bottom of the barrel. Finally, the connectors can also be damaged from freeze/thaw activity as seasons go by.
